Panel: A World of Translations
More books are translated from English each year than from any other language in the world. But far fewer books are translated into English, and translated literature in America is often treated as a niche market. Why is this, and how do authors and publishers of translated literature combat these assumptions and encourage more readers to sample the literature of the world? In this panel event, we’ll be discussing the challenges—and joys—of bringing voices from other cultures into the English-dominant book market.

Johanna Castillo is the Vice President and Executive Editor at Atria Books, an imprint of Simon and Schuster. She is an expert on the international and Latinx book market and has worked with authors such as Isabel Allende, María Dueñas, Félix J. Palma, and Laura Esquivel.
Christian Westermann is the Sales and Marketing Manager at Europa Editions. He has lived in Shanghai and has translated Chinese texts by the revered writer Lu Xun.
Kendall Storey is an Associate Editor and Publicist at Archipelago Books, and the Co-director of Elsewhere Editions, Archipelago’s children’s imprint.
The conversation will be moderated by Madeline Jones, Editorial Assistant at Henry Holt and the US Editor-at-large for Asymptote, a journal for world literature in translation.
