YPG Diversity Panel: Sensitivity Readers
YPG Diversity Panel: Sensitivity Readers
Readers embrace books that include characters of all different races, ethnicities, religions, genders, and sexual orientations. But by including characters with such varying backgrounds, writers are tasked with writing about people whose life experiences they may not share. How, then, are they to make sure that their characters’ portrayals are realistic and sympathetic and not laced with misconceptions, biases, and other potentially harmful stereotypes?
Join YPG on Wednesday, December 7th at 6:00 pm for an important discussion about sensitivity readers! Hear from industry experts about what a sensitivity reader does, how they do it, why their role in the editorial process is crucial, what’s at stake if this step is missed, and more!
Panelists include:
-
- Patrice Caldwell, Associate Editor at Hyperion and the founder of People of Color in Publishing
- Tiffany Liao, Editor at Henry Holt Books for Young Readers
- Namrata Tripathi, Editorial Director at Dial Books
- Moderator: Phoebe Yeh, VP & Publisher of Crown Books for Young Readers
When: Wednesday, December 7th at 6:00 pm
Where: Random House, 1745 Broadway
