YPG in Costume

The winners of the YPG Halloween Happy Hour Costume Contest, Liz van Buren and Rebecca Scherer in a Harriet the Spy ensemble.
Costume-clad YPG members gathered at the Dove Parlour in Greenwich Village on October 25 to kick off Halloween weekend. The Dove Parlour was founded in 2004 with the goal to bring “a bit of luxury to the everyday lives of New Yorkers.” The bar is designed to look like an old New York parlour room and the menu offers an array of creative cocktails, like the Honey Dove, made of cognac, honey, and organic vanilla soy milk, and the Holly and Ivy, made of bourbon, fresh cranberries, basil, lime, and sugar. New York Magazine describes the Dove Parlour as feeling “as if they were drinking inside a game of Clue.”
This mystery aura set the tone for YPG’s Halloween party, as the dimly-lit speakeasy-style bar gave the evening a hint of eeriness while literary-characters roamed the space. Sherlock Holmes waited to order a drink (perhaps something Lapsang Souchong-based?); Harriet the Spy observed people with Paddington Bear; a group of Gryffindors gossiped; Bad Kitty scurried across people’s paths. After careful deliberation by the YPG board, the best costumes were determined to be the Harriet the Spy ensemble. Great work, Liz van Buren and Rebecca Scherer!
Aside from Halloween, talk revolved around current work projects, recent reads, and the impending Hurricane Sandy. But with the hurricane still days away, attendees were more concerned with meeting new people and drinking delicious cocktails. At the end of the evening, an exclusive after-party was held at the Artichoke counter on MacDougal Street.
