The Young to Publishing Group threw its third annual House Party in honor of the 2012 National Book Awards on Wednesday, November 14, from 8:00-11:00pm at Random House, Inc. Almost 300 publishing professionals from houses and agencies alike donned their best cocktail attire and assembled for the highly anticipated event. Ticket proceeds from this year’s House Party benefitted BookUp, an initiative of the National Book Foundation that provides free books to middle school students.

Partygoers were greeted with free books written by the NBA nominees and donated by participating publishers. Fresh off the presses, official YPG “Baby Got Book” tote bags were also available for purchase, the proceeds of which were donated to benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Top donors received gift certificates for everything from Blockheads to a Cheese 101 course from Murray’s Cheese (valued at $200), thanks to our sponsors.

YPG Planning Committee members were on hand all night checking guests in, tending bar, selling totes, and monitoring the many delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts. A live feed of the actual National Book Awards ceremony at Cipriani on Wall Street was broadcast, and those who wished to watch and listen more intimately were able to do so in a private screening room with a huge projection screen and surround sound, where YPG members rooted for their favorites and cheered for the winning authors.

The crowd ate, drank, and danced the night away to the music of DJ Marshall Moore, who was a definite crowd pleaser, taking requests and playing hits throughout the evening. YPG members proved that they were not too shy to bust a move or two, even performing the YouTube sensation “Gangnam Style” dance en masse. As the clock struck eleven, many simply did not want to leave. The planning committee had no choice but to usher out the guests and thank them for their attendance and enthusiasm on the dance floor.

The night wasn’t over just yet, as several YPG members raced downtown to the Cipriani to attend the official National Book Awards afterparty, tickets provided courtesy of Penguin and distributed via YPG Twitter raffle to House Party attendees. Those with passes to this swanky affair encountered an airborne DJ, a photobooth, and even more food and drink.

The many tweets, Facebook posts, and Instagram photos circulating the interwebs throughout the event and into the next day all pointed to the same conclusion: this was truly the best YPG NBA House Party yet. Thanks to all who came out for a fantastic night!
