Hungry for the Games: YPG Does Battle on Hunger Games Trivia Night

On Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at 6:30pm, around sixty YPG members from twelve AAP member houses and several literary agencies gathered at the AAP New York offices to duke it out on YPG’s first ever Trivia Night devoted to The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins’s hit YA dystopian novel (Scholastic, 2008). The event was held just days before the heavily anticipated film adaptation’s release in theaters on March 23.

The group was divided into twelve districts, just as the citizens of Panem in the book are split. Which district would prove the most knowledgeable about Games heroine Katniss and company? What followed were three grueling rounds of trivia led by YPG Planning Committee members. Some questions were easier than others, evoking scoffs (“What is District 12 known for?”) and smirks (“What is Katniss’s weapon of choice?”). Others were tricky, causing some contestants to freeze in their tracks (“What is Foxface’s real name?”) and struggle to remember minute details (“What do the sponsors send to Katniss? One point for each item!”).

After each round, the scores were tallied and announced. It was an extremely close battle, with many districts within just a few points of each other throughout the rounds. At the end of the night (and after many utterances of “May the odds be ever in your favor”), only one district emerged triumphant: District 7! They cheered and would soon be showered with their well-earned Hunger Games–themed prizes via mail (donated by Scholastic). A four-way tie for second place left those districts in disbelief, but not all was lost. Every attendee left with a copy of The Hunger Pains: A Parody by The Harvard Lampoon (Touchstone, 2012). Two lucky winners even won free tickets to meet the authors at a Hunger Pains event at the 92YTribeca.

Trivia Night made YPG members even more excited for the film’s release (as if that were humanly possible), and will most likely happen again when Catching Fire hits theaters in fall 2013. Until then, happy Hunger Games!
