YPG Cares at the JBC’s National Jewish Book Awards
On the night of Wednesday, March 14, 2011, the Jewish Book Council gathered at the Center for Jewish History to announce the winners of the sixty-first National Jewish Book Awards in Manhattan. YPG Cares volunteers were there to witness an event comparable to few in honoring writers from all over the world for their contribution to Jewish literature. Awards were given spanning many categories, including Contemporary Jewish Life and Practice, Fiction, History, and Jewish Book of the Year, just to name a few.
The evening began with an exclusive drink ceremony, attended by authors, editors, and publishers of the like. Some notable figures present included New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Amazon’s Larry Kirshbaum, and Knopf Editor in Chief and Publisher Sonny Mehta, who was there to congratulate his author Simon Sebag Montefiore on winning the Jewish Book of the Year Award for Jerusalem: A Biography (Knopf, 2011).
The celebration continued long into the night with a celebratory dinner, awards, and memorable speeches from the winners. YPG Cares members took photographs, handed out programs, and ushered guests in and out of auditorium and banquet hall. The affair was quite social, and members of YPG were given the opportunity to meet authors, editors, and members of the Jewish Book Council (JBC) at their leisure. It was a wonderful experience for the YPG volunteers, and the feedback from the JBC was exceptional. To say the least, the event was truly beneficial for both parties, and we look forward to working with the Jewish Book Council in the future. Stay tuned to our YPG Newsletters for updates!
