YPG Cares about Books for NYC Schools

A two-part event on Saturday, February 11, and Saturday, February 25, was YPG Cares’ fourth successful collaboration in support of the Center for Fiction and our largest assignment with them to date. Nine YPG Cares volunteers from 8 AAP member publishing houses gave up their weekends to volunteer at the CFF and help with the sorting, unpacking, and organizing of a significant donation (20,000 books) that they received for their NYC schools book drive.

This event highlighted YPG Cares’ continued support of Books for NYC Schools, a program run by the Center for Fiction that works with publishers to gather and distribute thousands of books a year for public school libraries and classes in at-risk neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs. In tandem with KidsRead, the Center works with middle and high school teachers to provide books that can be integrated into their curricula and to bring their classes to the Center during the school day to meet and talk with the young adult and literary fiction authors they have been reading.

In two afternoons, YPG Cares organized and packaged boxes of requested genre-related or title-specific requests for over thirty high schools across the NYC boroughs. Always a worthwhile community service event, YPG Cares volunteers cheerfully served the small-staffed CFF in a process vital to the success of the Books for NYC Schools program.

Please visit the CFF’s website for information about their organization: http://www.centerforfiction.org/. Email us at youngtopublishing@gmail.com if you would like to join for YPG Cares’ next event with the CFF.
