YPG Cares Supports Books for a Better Life
Sometimes community service really does pay off. After being invited to the exclusive kick-off cocktail reception announcing the Books for a Better Life finalists at Random House back in October 2011, several YPG Cares volunteers expressed interest in supporting the cause in other ways.
It is, after all, a great cause. The concept behind Books for a Better Life was born sixteen years ago with the intention of recognizing authors writing about self-improvement, a genre impacting the second half of the twentieth century more than any other. Submissions are received in ten categories that are judged independently, and the winners are announced during an awards ceremony hosted by the New York City—Southern New York Chapter of the National MS Society in Manhattan in early March each year. All proceeds from the evening will help fund national multiple sclerosis research and comprehensive programs and services for people affected by MS. Since its inception in 1996, Books for a Better Life has honored more than five hundred authors and has now raised more than $1.8 million to speed progress toward achieving a world free of MS, thanks to the support of the publishing industry.
Moved by the mission, YPG Cares sacrificed their Valentine’s Day this year to work with the New York City Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (www.MSnyc.org) on a massive after-work mailing. On February 14, 2012, YPG Cares volunteers from six different companies assisted in the preparation and mailing of 3,600 Books for a Better Life Fundraiser invitations. As a thank you for participating, all assisting volunteers received free tickets to the Books for a Better Life Awards Ceremony!
In addition to those lucky ticket-holding supporters, four more YPG Cares volunteers from other houses will be working the Books for a Better Life Awards Ceremony on March 12, 2012, at the New York Times Center. The cocktail reception starts at 5:30pm and the Awards Ceremony starts at 7:00pm. Participating YPG Cares volunteers will be assisting at the check-in table and greeting the attendees, or will be found by the Awards stage, ushering the winners and honorees on and off the stage.
