NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) invited YPG members to attend “Career Night,” an informational session focused on their publishing courses, certificates and master’s program on Tuesday, August 30th, 2011. Led by Andrea Chambers, Director of the NYU Center of Publishing, the event was packed with junior editors, literary agents, and budding marketing specialists eager to discover the latest trends in magazine and book publishing.

Expert guest speakers, Libby Jordan (President of Musubu, Inc.) and Jay Ehrlich (Executive Director of Online Editorial at Women’s Health magazine) provided the group with invaluable resources for self-publishing websites, advice on marketing tactics, ways to reinvent social media, and statistics on the digital growth that continues to be booming industry-wide. Both Jordan and Ehrlich additionally stressed the importance of knowing basic HTML, and the growing social trend of sharing free content.

“According to industry sources, there were more than 3,000 new publishers applying for ISBN’s in 2010,” said Jordan, “and we’ve seen triple-digit growth in self-publishing.”

So what are some of the hot careers to look out for in 2012? Check out these titles…

• SEO (Search Engine Optimization) writers
• Video Production Editors
• App Developers
• Designers – Web/E-books
• HTML Coders

With that in mind, it might be time to check out NYU’s Center for Publishing or programs at other local colleges and universities for courses that help you learn more about all of the above.
