YPG Cares Hits the Street (Fair): Housing Works Bookstore and Thrift Shop’s Sixth Annual Open Air Street Fair
On Sunday, June 5, 2011, a wonderful group of YPG Cares volunteers from several AAP member houses donated the remaining hours of their weekend to help out at Housing Works Bookstore and Thrift Shop’s Sixth Annual Open Air Street Fair. This annual outdoor tradition sells thousands of books, movies, CDs, and records for $1 or less plus clothes, and accessories (not to mention beer and barbecue). All proceeds from this huge neighborhood event go directly to the Housing Works cause—fighting homelessness and AIDS.
YPG-ers—from editors to librarians—tackled the closing shift of the fair and boxed up hundreds of books and broke down tents and tables like champs—leaving Crosby Street looking better than ever. Although the weather kept threatening to rain, the YPG clean-up crew was in high spirits and had a great time discovering street fair treasures (Twilight 3-D puzzle anyone?). It was great to help out with Housing Works largest fundraising event of the year—in 2007 and 2008, the two street fairs attracted more than 50,000 people and generated more than $45,000 for supporting homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.
We look forward to supporting Housing Works Bookstore on future initiatives.
