YPG Kicks Off Community Service Initiative with New York Cares Day
It’s official: YPG cares about its community! On October 24, 2010, thirty-six members of AAP’s Young to Publishing Group gave up a hard-earned Saturday to participate in the inaugural activity of YPG’s new Community Service Initiative, YPG Cares, painting a school library in Astoria, Queens. Volunteers from more than 15 publishing houses gathered at PS126Q: the Albert Shanker School for Visual and Performing Arts to paint literacy-themed murals in the school library and surrounding hallways. We ended the day covered in paint, full of pizza, and excited to leave the school a brighter place for its students. Although most of the murals were traced ahead of time by a professional artist, we did get to design a few from scratch and show our enthusiasm for literature in ways that (we hope) inspire local youth to love books as much as we all do! Here are some photos from the event.

This project was part of New York Cares Day (www.newyorkcaresday.org), the city’s largest day of volunteer service geared at contributing to NYC’s educational environments. Participating AAP houses included: Bedford St. Martins, Egmont, Harlequin, HarperCollins, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, John Wiley & Sons, Macmillan, Newmarket Press, Oxford University Press, Penguin, Random House, Scholastic, Sterling, Simon & Schuster, Thieme New York, and others. YPG wants to extend a big thanks to our intrepid volunteers for all their great work in helping make the Albert Shanker School a brighter and more fun learning environment for its students!
The YPG’s Community Service Initiative was formed to support our mission to give entry-level employees a chance to both build a community outside of their own publishing house and give back to New York’s community as a whole. For information on upcoming projects, to volunteer, or to contribute ideas for additional community service activities, email youngtopublishing@gmail.com or contact Becca Worthington at or 212-255-0200, ext. 262. We hope to see you at our next event!
