YPG Cares: Volunteer with Books Through Bars

Cincopa video hosting solution for your website. Another great product from Cincopa Send Files.

Stack Of BooksBooks Through Bars is seeking volunteers to help pack and ship books to prisoners. BTB is an all-volunteer run collective that sends free books to incarcerated people across the country. Currently, they have a backlog of over 500 letters from prisoners requesting books, so if anyone is able to volunteer their time, it would be much appreciated! You and a friend can drop in at any time during their volunteer hours (see below) and you can stay the full shift or leave whenever you need to.

If you’re unable to volunteer, book donations are also welcome. The most popular books requested are as follows:

  • African-American history, especially 20th century
  • Native-American history
  • Latin-American history
  • Social sciences
  • How-to (drawing, origami, chess, knitting, sign language…)
  • Mayan and Aztec history
  • Memoirs and fiction by people of color
  • Mythology
  • Dictionaries, thesauruses, GED studies, atlases
  • Language studies
  • Sudoku/puzzles
  • Guides to starting a business
  • Yoga and Pilates guides
  • Mass-market mysteries, thrillers, sci-fi

Learn more about book donations here. Stamps, brown paper grocery bags, and rolls of clear packing tape are also needed.

  • When: Sundays, 2:00 – 5:00pm; Mondays, 7:30 – 9:30pm; some Wednesdays from 7:00 – 9:00pm (check their event calendar here)
