YPG Bay Area Hosts Panel on Freelancing in Publishing
Thanks to the 20+ Bay Area YPGers who were able to join us for Be Your Own Boss: How to Successfully Freelance in Publishing on Wednesday April 15th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at the Berkeley Public Library, South Branch. It was one of our most successful panels to-date, thanks to our all-star panelists: Debbie Berne, Founder of Debbie Berne Design; Helena Brantley, Founder of Red Pencil Publicity + Marketing; and Barbara Fuller, Director of Editcetera, and our fabulous moderator, Laura Mazer, Executive Editor at Seal Press.
We covered a lot of ground in an hour—from approaching potential clients to negotiating terms of agreement—but we still wish we had them longer! Whether you were there for editing, design or publicity, there were more than a few takeaways and invaluable advice, including best practices for starting your freelance career (say yes to—almost—everything!) and how to make your client happy (flexibility is key!). Drinks at Jupiter afterwards was a great time too.
Again, thank you to our participants. We’re so lucky to have such a tight-knit, supportive publishing community in the Bay Area. Looking forward to the next one!
